Mosaics, Song Writing, and Poetry in the NT

Big 4 Breeze Caravan Park, Katherine, Northern Territory

Last night I did a late switch for tonight’s camping venue. We were going to go to Katherine Farmstay as the place had terrific reviews. But when I looked more closely, it was mostly families loving the animal feeding, and we would be on a farm (the clue was probably in the name, duh)... so swapped things around and we are now at a terrific park that is bike-riding distance from the Katherine Hot Springs - which we will explore tomorrow. Hot springs sounds much better than feeding animals :-)

This afternoon I  finished my mosaic Boab trees.

Here is my collection of mosaics so far! Must admit I am not loving the Smalti glass (too fiddly and hard to cut) and wish I’d just gone with my usual art glass approach. But that is over 3500kms away so have to make do.

Boab Trees in the Kimberlys (smalti glass)

Flowers in the rocks (slate and smalti)

Mosaic swallows (various types of mosaic media including shells from 80 Mile Beach)

Purple Flowers in Karajini (local rocks and smalti).
This one was super frustrating as the grout was drying too fast. So I dont love it but cant quite bring myself to leave it behind.

In any event, I have embarked on a new project! Inspired by Matt Black's excellent collection of poems "Fishing Dentures Out of Mashed Potatoes", mostly about his family, I am pulling together all the stories and poems I have written about the kids over the past two decades that are currently randomly scattered all throughout my computer. I am also writing some new things.

Mark, meanwhile, is working on an album of songs for the trip. The first song is called "Going Downhill". I will share some of the lyrics in the next blog.

Finally, showing no evidence that our lives are going downhill, we had an excellent meal of beef ribs and lamb shanks at the caravan park bistro tonight.
